About The Ekid People

An inside-out reconstruction of origins, migrations, and settlement—grounded in community voices.

About The Ekid People

This intellectual project is an attempt to reconstruct the history of Eket people in Akwa Ibom State, since the pre-colonial era, from an inside-out perspective. It should be stated from the outset that it would require more than a volume to holistically re-capture the long and robust history of Eket people; however, the first volume should naturally concern the origin, migration and settlement of the people.

Ekid People — Intro

To be able generate a fair glimpse of the past, extensive oral and written sources would have to be critically interrogated in the process of the research. To achieve this onerous task, all the villages listed below shall be visited and knowledgeable custodians of their history interviewed. In addition, relevant informants from some related and neighbouring communities such as: Nsit, Ubium, Iman, Itam, Oron, Mkpat Enin, etc. would be consulted. Finally, research would be undertaken in the National archives at Calabar, Enugu and Ibadan.
